    To bolster federal efforts to make hydrogen an even more viable energy alternative, NIST developed a new hydrogen test facility to evaluate tests, materials, mechanical properties, and standards for hydrogen pipelines. The facility houses two test chambers, one of which is the largest such test chamber in the nation. For this larger test chamber, RMH utilized computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling to depict the airflow throughout the lab. CFD modeling helped RMH’s engineers design an efficient airflow system that provided an alternative to simply over-ventilating the space as a method for mitigating the potential of a devastating combustible occurrence or an accidental constant-volume release of hydrogen into the space. RMH engineers used the CFD modeling to analyze mixing and dispersion of the gas and to predict maximum allowable concentrations in the space.
