    The primary function of this 70,000 SF facility, part of Terumo BCT’s corporate campus, is to sterilize packaged medical supplies through their plastic wrappings using ethylene oxide (EtO) gas. The medical supplies, which include dialysis filters and artificial heart components, need to be sterilized after being packaged since the packaging process presents opportunities for product con­tamination. The sterilization building houses eight sealed ethylene oxide sterilization chambers, labs, offices, and high-bay shipping and receiving facili­ties. A sophisticated mechanical design with strict pres­surization requirements isolates the ethylene oxide from the ambient environment. Steam, purified water, nitrogen, vacuum, compressed air, natural gas, and chilled water systems further support the sterilization process. Efficient evaporative cooling is employed in the larger, less populated spaces such as the sterilization chamber room and shipping and receiving areas.
