Headquarters Central Plant

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

Salt Lake City, Utah

The headquarters complex central plant replaces a steam plant that had served the 25-acre campus for 90 years. The new plant not only doubles steam output, but adds 4,800 tons of chilled water capacity. Initial utility distribution featured 1,100 feet of direct-bury steam, condensate, and chilled water mains interconnected with campus utility tunnels. The facility currently feeds 15 buildings with steam and nine with chilled water including such prominent facilities as the Salt Lake Tabernacle, Conference Center, and new Church History Library. The central plant is configured to accommodate further increases in chilled water and steam capacity through the installation of an ice storage system and additional boilers.
