RMH Wins ACEC/CO Engineering Excellence Honor Award for Red Rocks Community College’s New Student Recreation Center

November 6, 2017

The RMH Group (RMH) was presented with an Honor Award at the 2018 Engineering Excellence Awards luncheon hosted by the American Council of Engineering Companies of Colorado (ACEC/CO) for the firm’s role in the design of the new Student Recreation Center at Red Rocks Community College’s Lakewood campus. The ACEC/CO Engineering Excellence Awards competition recognizes Colorado engineering firms for projects that demonstrate a high degree of innovation, complexity, achievement, and value. The Student Recreation Center project was entered in the Building/Technology Systems Category. The centerpiece of RMH’s award submittal was a 30″x30″ photographic display panel/board highlighting the aesthetic and technical attributes of the project.

RMH provided mechanical/electrical engineering and lighting design for the new 35,500-square-foot Student Recreation Center. The new facility, which was built and supported by student fees, features a two-court gymnasium , a weight and cardiovascular area, dance/exercise studios, a climbing and bouldering wall, an outdoor fitness deck, and student gathering spaces. In addition to improving the health, wellness and quality of life of students, faculty and staff, the Student Recreation Center provides the necessary foundation for the academic programs and activities related to the recreation industry—one of Colorado’s key economic sectors.

A variety of mechanical/electrical sustainable design strategies were implemented for the Student Recreation Center including indirect evaporative cooling, thermal displacement ventilation, heat recovery, radiant heating, destratification fans, demand control ventilation system, and built-in flexibility for future solar photovoltaic installations.

Each board that was entered into the competition will be displayed at the State Capitol from February 18 through February 24, 2018, in honor of National Engineers Week.
